Having tackled themes of a somewhat taboo nature, Bengali cinema has often experimented. From psychological thrillers to narratives about identity and desire, some ideas, up to 2025, did bring in the heat with ten titles.
1. Gandu (2010)

The cult classic black sheep, as it were, was directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee (“Q”) and tells the story of an angry young rapper attempting to make his way through a world of horny meanderings, drugs, and underground music. A whole lot of controversies were stirred by those on-screen explicit episodes, first for having dark visuals and the very non-linear narrative. This grabbed a highly polarized hit among the viewers.
2. Chatrak (2011)

Directed by Vimukthi Jayasundara, and starring Paoli Dam and Anubrata Basu, the film has real, unsimulated sex scenes. The story deals with love, dislocation, and mental instability in post-liberalisation Kolkata, creating a huge public controversy.
3. Cosmic Sex (2010)

Directed by Amitabh Chakraborty and starring Rituparna Sen, this film straddles eroticism and spirituality. The story revolves around the awakening of a young man under the tutelage of a mystic woman who instructed him in “Dehotatva,” the sacredness of physicality. It was therefore a controversial movie, though creams of the metaphysical philosophy lauded it.
4. Bibar (2006)

Based on Samaresh Babu’s novel, this Subrata Sen–directed drama looks at obsession, desire, and moral decline. The story centers around a loan inspector drawn into a disturbing relationship with a call girl, exposing the darker side of urban indulgence.
5. Rajkahini (2015)

A Srijit Mukherji landmark, Rajkahini is set in a brothel during Partition. The racy storyline foregrounds the lives of sex workers in the midst of upheaval with potent layering of politics and sensuality interspersed with stirring female performances.
6. Nagarkirtan (2017)

An epically approach drama directed by Kaushik Ganguly wherein love and acceptance for transgender people find their focus. With compelling performances by Riddhi Sen and Ritwick Chakraborty, the film addresses gender reassignment and societal prejudice with sensitivity and daring.
7. Chhip Suto Char (2016)
This realistic drama romanticizes three friends—Suman, an aspiring filmmaker; Joy, an ardently disillusioned rich man; and Pratik, a voyeur. They prey on women under false pretenses, unfolding the salon-like attitudes toward fame and cinema.
8. Parnomochi (2024–2025)

Based on a novella, this drama tracks an adolescent’s descent into sexual addiction. The film delves into adolescent angst and the dark side of exposure to adult content in a transforming media arena.
9. Arekti Premer Golpo (2010)

Directed by Kaushik Ganguly, the film chronicles a same-sex love story with the Jatra performer Chopal Bhaduri. It remains a courageous take on LGBTQ+ issues in Bengali cinema in those days.
10. Khawto (2016)

Directed by Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, it stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Paoli Dam, and Raima Sen. Khawto is a sensual thriller concerning a novelist who unravels tales of lust and betrayal—suspiciously blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality.
Why These Films Matter
Largely erotic dramas, social and queer narratives—that is the range of Bengali films, all unified by one great meaning: bold storytelling. These films in one way or the other stretched the boundaries of Indian cinema and were in opposition to the forces favoring censorship and strong heated discussions. They balance emotional complexity and societal critique with unapologetic intimacy.
